Before arrival
Found your dream study program? Awesome! Now it’s time to get ready before take-off.
Find a Place to Live
In Vejle, you can apply for student housing through public housing associations (for free!) or rent from private landlords. Many students also use Facebook groups and sites like BoligPortal or Lejebolig.dk. Just remember:
Always get a written contract – and watch out for rental scams!
Residence Permit & Visa
Depending on where you’re from, you may need a residence permit or visa to stay in Denmark. Start early – it can take time to process.
Important Documents
Bring all the paperwork you’ll need for registration and arrival (passport, admission letter, insurance, etc.). EU and non-EU students may need different documents – check the exact requirements on the SIRI website

Upon arrival
When you arrive in Denmark, there are a few important things to take care of to get properly settled:
-
Housing: Carefully read your rental contract. Within 14 days, you must inspect your accommodation and send a list of any damages or missing items with photos to your landlord.
-
CPR number: Apply for your CPR number. This number is essential for accessing healthcare, opening a bank account, public libraries and many other practical matters.
-
MitID & e-Boks: Once you have your CPR, you’ll need to create a MitID and register for e-Boks, which is your secure digital mailbox for communication with public authorities.
-
Bank account & NemKonto: Open a Danish bank account and register it as your NemKonto. This is needed to receive public payments like SU or housing benefits.
-
Mobile & Internet: Choose a mobile provider and set up a Danish mobile subscription. You’ll need this to activate services like MobilePay, which is widely used in Denmark.
-
SU & housing benefits: If you’re eligible, apply for SU (student grants), Boligstøtte (housing support), and possibly an indskudslån (loan for housing deposit).
-
Transport: Get familiar with local transport options, both from the airport and around your new city.
-
If you choose to leave
Before you leave Denmark permanently, make sure to take care of these important steps:
-
Deregister your address: If you’re moving away for more than six months, you must report your departure to the municipality and deregister your Danish address.
-
End your rental: Inform your landlord, cancel your rental contract, and agree on a date for the move-out inspection.
-
Bank account & payments: Close your Danish bank account or leave it open until all payments (e.g. deposit refund or SU) are settled.
-
Unsubscribe from services: Cancel subscriptions such as internet, phone plans, or insurance.
-
Return borrowed items: Make sure to return any books or materials borrowed from your university or local library.
-
Tax & authorities: Notify the Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen) if needed and settle any outstanding matters.
Even if your stay abroad is shorter than six months, you might still need to update your registration – especially if you won’t have full access to your Danish residence during that time.
