"Threat, Alert & Hope og Implement" by artists Yufan Wang og Rina Shumylo

A three‑part artwork about sustainability and resilience. The water surrounding Vejle is rising – especially in the coming years. As the city lies very close to sea level, this poses a very tangible threat and is therefore given the highest priority in Vejle’s climate strategy. Together, the three parts of the artwork describe a possible process of development that we, as viewers and citizens, may go through on the path towards a greener and more sustainable way of life.

The artwork starts in the stairway leading to “Bomuldsloftet” and continues across the first‑floor landing and into the meeting room. This three‑part installation was created by Yufan Wang and Rina Shumylo.

THREAT!

The first part of the artwork is displayed in the stairway, where the different blue layers illustrate the development of water levels in Vejle over time, from the year 1900 to 2100.

ALERT AND HOPE!

Above the waters… The artwork’s second part.

Freed from the masses of water, there is space to breathe and to see and feel reality. Pull the rope of the large bell and be reminded of the human‑made threats that endanger people, animals, and plants. The church‑like window and the paintings on the walls are meant to remind us that human beings are also spiritual and creative creatures, longing to become one with the world.

The bell and the window frame are made from recycled materials collected at Vejle’s recycling centre, while the paintings and the “glass” in the window originate from a giant tape installation that was created for and exhibited at Spinderihallerne in 2019.

IMPLEMENT!

Time to act… The artwork’s third part

The third part of the artwork can be found in the meeting room “Bomuldsloftet” – a wall collage portraying local changemakers who are all making a difference for a more sustainable and resilient Vejle, with regard to climate, environment, and our social communities.

By highlighting local citizens from everyday life, the intention is to inspire more people to engage in creating a greener and more sustainable future. This does not have to be solely about large‑scale infrastructural or macro‑economic initiatives – we can all make a difference right where we live and work each day. For example, by sorting our waste, reducing food waste, or simply beginning to share our personal interests and hobbies with others.
